Let’s Generate Revenue for Massachusetts

It's Time to Fund the Bay State

Connecticut owes Massachusetts residents a great big "thank you." That's because last year Bay Staters underwrote the salaries of nearly 3,000 Connecticut teachers. How did we do this? By spending more than $900 million at Connecticut's world-class resort casinos.

We can bring those dollars home to Massachusetts to be spent right here in Massachusetts schools. But only if the commonwealth's leaders approve resort-style casinos in our state. The benefit of an additional $400 million in new tax revenue would profoundly benefit public education throughout our 351 cities and towns.

If We Spent That Extra $400 Million on Education, We Could:

Hire 6,233 New Teachers Across the State

Teacher salaries, including benefits, average $60,700. This salary figure is derived from the American Federation of Teachers study on salary trends. It factors in inflation, "extra duty pay," and "fringe benefits," such as health care.

Build 11 New Elementary Schools

That's 11 new schools if you use the higher cost estimate for building a Massachusetts public school; 16 new schools if you use the most conservative cost estimate. Building and staffing new schools will do more than benefit students. It will also help to grow our economy.

Fund Tuition for Almost 5,000 Students to Attend UMass-Amherst for Four Years

Four-year degrees for in-state students average $82,984. And with $400 million in new state tax revenue, 4,820 deserving Massachusetts men and women could attend UMass-Amherst for four years, or it could underwrite one-year of tuition for 19,280 Massachusetts students.
